In 1899, Buick originated as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company which was an independent internal combustion engine and motor-car company. Buick is one of the oldest automobile brands in the world and the oldest still-active makes. They are a premium brand of General Motors. The Buick Motor Company was incorporated in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick and then was later taken over by James H Whiting. To manage the new acquisition, William C Durant was brought in in 1904. Two prototypes were built between 1899 and 1902. Another prototype was then built in 1904 and that is when Whiting authorized production of the first models to the public. None of the 37 Buick’s made that year survive today except for two replicas. One is the 1904 endurance car which is at the Buick Gallery and Research Center, there is also a Model B that was assembled by an enthusiast in California for the divisions 100th anniversary. Buick was nicknamed the “moving couch of America” because they were first built to replicate the living room in a moving vehicle. The Model B was given new power train and chassis architecture which was continued through to the 1909 Model F. Buick’s first closed-body car was introduced in 1911 and in 1939 they introduced turn signals not only to their cars, but to the industry. The Portholes Debut was in 1949, followed by Buick’s 50th Anniversary and the introduction of the Roadmaster Skylark in 1953. The Electra and LeSabre were introduced in 1959. The Skylark nameplate returned as a compact car in 1961 and the Riviera was introduced as its own model two years later. In 1970 the GSX high performance option package was first offered on the Gran Sport (GS) 455, a year later the Boat-tail Riviera was introduced followed by the Regal which was offered as an upper trim level on the Century. Buick celebrated their 75th Anniversary in 1978 and that same year introduced the Turbocharged V6 in the Regal Sport Coupe. 1984 was when the overall domestic sales of Buick peaked. However, overtime the number of models in the Buick lineup dropped. In 2005 Buick began consolidating its lineup. JD Power & Associates Vehicle Dependability Study named Buick which tied with Jaguar in 2009 as the most dependable brand in the United States.
